Saffron is effective against breast cancer , leukemia and Alzheimer 's disease. A recent conference  revealed the properties of this spice thanks to research conducted at the University of Patras on the benefits of derivatives of the plant in the fight against breast cancer.

The anti- oxidants quality of saffron are known for some time as well as being known the anticancer action of Crocin ( Crocin is the color, that is darker than greater are the anticancer molecules ) and safranal ( power fragrant ) in it that perform the protection of the human body from free radicals that cause cellular damage first and then the disease. The benefits of  anti -oxidant action of the saffron  were presented by Professor Moschos Polissiou by the University of Athens who recalled how the substances contained in saffron can protect and revitalize cells , enhance blood circulation in the brain and improve the memory , reduce various cardiovascular disorders and keep under control the growth of cancer cells. In addition , Professor Petros Tarantilis , professor of instrumental analysis chemistry of natural products, has spoken of the effects of carotenoids (contained in the highest percentage in the saffron) on cancer cells called K562 and HL -60 extracted from leukemia patients . " In vitro studies conducted to date on the effects of carotenoids of saffron - said Tarantilis - have shown that they reduce the proliferation of those cells." The results of research on the effects of a compound extracted from saffron and and its molecule called  transcrocina 4 in the process of proliferation of breast cancer were instead presented by  Professor Fotini Lamari , at the University of Patras. This study - said the expert - it was the first ever on the effects of the compounds of saffron in breast cancer. "The results show that these extracts reduced the proliferation of various cell types”  said Lamari , who emphasized that the experiments were conducted on cancer cells in vitro in the presence of concentrations of saffron. Lamari also reports of research conducted Greece on the possibility that saffron may have protective properties against Alzheimer 's disease, degenerative disorder of the mental faculties that affects a growing number of elderly. Laboratory experiments conducted on guinea pigs - said the scholar - have shown that extracts of the plant reversed loss of memory and cognition caused by free radicals. Saffron would also demonstrated the ability to protect neurons from damage of oxidants that cause Parkinson's disease . A recent study conducted by researchers at the University of Sydney in Australia and the University of  Aquila in Italy , found that saffron, the most precious spice in the world ,  helps to protect the eyes from damage from harmful UV rays , slows the progression of eye diseases such as macular degeneration , which causes blindness. Another study published in the British Journal of Gynaecology has found that saffron is effective in treating the symptoms of premenstrual syndrome, including depression , reducing irritability and mood swings.



Among the monographs of medicinal plants published by the WHO ( World Health Organization ) , the saffron is in first place, is described characteristics , biological properties and therapeutic uses of medicinal and spice. Saffron contains : Calcium , Sodium, Phosphorus , Potassium, Iron , Magnesium , Zinc , Copper, Manganese , Selenium, retinol , Vitamin A, Thiamin , Riboflavin , Niacin , Pyridoxine , or vitamin B9 or folacin M , Folate , Cobalamin , Vitamin ascorbic acid ( vitamin C ) , Vitamin D ( D2 + D3) , Cholecalciferol , fatty acids , polyunsaturated fats (fat lifesaving) , Theobromine . But most of all the chemical elements that give saffron its specific organoleptic qualities and cancer are: crocetin , crocin ,  picrocrocin andsafranal. These four molecules are all derived from a single precursor , the zeaxanthin, which are derived from enzymatic degradation , through the work of a dioxygenase specific . Its red color is due to carotenoids that have a high degree of protection of the cells carcinogenic molecules . In the form below , you can see the content of carotenoids in some elements . Saffron contains on average 2000 - 3000 times carotenoids zeaxanthin compared to foods with the highest concentration of this molecule in nature.

Saffron is, in fact , able to awaken the senses : it improves blood circulation and helps warm up the mucous membranes  increasing the sensitivity
